You may have heard one of us or someone else talking about carb cycling. What is carb cycling? What's the point? How is it different than the Atkins diet or some other low carb dieting method? All good questions. Carb Cycling is a method that many body builders and bikini show participants use to cut body fat and get leaner. The idea is to eat carbs on a three day cycle. A high carb day, medium carb day and low carb day.... The reason this method can be so effective is SCIENCE ;) No seriously, it is. When you use a low carb diet or Atkins to cut fat it can be very effective. Most people with fat to lose will find that this method will work but find it unsustainable and many end up gaining all that weight back. Most also experience a plateau effect where they lose a certain amount of weight and then cannot lose those last few pounds. The scientific reason for this is that your body learns that it will not be getting carbs so whenever it does, it holds on to them and stores them away instead of making them available to be burned as fuel. Carb Cycling keeps the body guessing so that this does not happen. Every three days you are giving your body more than enough carbohydrates to burn for energy and then going into different levels of deficit for the following 2 days. This method alone is how I got from 9% body fat to 7% body fat.... It works. Here's a calculator to help you figure out what High and low should be for you. Just split the difference for the Medium Carb day.
